CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The breastbone was no match for the dagger. Thomas penetrated it with one swift, effortless motion, and felt the soft heart beneath give way to its perfect point.

Further he pressed, all the way through, until the dagger protruded out the back, and blood poured over Thomas's hand. He waited for the struggle to be over, and soon it was. Then he cut straight down, opening the abdomen. He pulled apart the flesh and sliced out the heart, which was warm but stilled. Then he carved out the liver.

He placed the organs—steaming in the cold air—in the Tupperware containers he had set nearby. Then he cleaned up the mess, and went to clean himself up.

Thomas was untroubled. He had done what he had to do.

Jake startled as he sat alone in the living room of his house, his face illuminated by his cell. He hadn't bothered to turn on the lights. When he got home from dinner, he had sat and scrolled through his texts with Becca, and wondered if he should call her. And now, just as he was drifting into an uneasy sleep, he felt a sharp, sudden pain in his chest, and sat up straight in the leather chair beside the cold fireplace.

He thought of his uncle's words, from the will:

The experienced Huntsman can feel what the victim is feeling—even see what they are seeing—at the moment of their deepest terror. This is the time for action...

Jake sat still in the chair, feeling the point of pain in his chest.

Love clouds judgment.

All evening, Jake couldn't tell if his uneasiness was due to his jealousy or if there was something worse afoot.

But the pain in his chest was real.

Jake stood up, and in that instant the pain vanished as suddenly as it had struck him. He stood there for a full minute, the phone in his hand, trying to sift through the fog of his senses.

Time to call Maddie.
